A set of dice printed on this Jo-Jo Brand apple crate label sets it apart from the orchard and harvest scenes common to the type. Like most fruit crate labels, it was a color lithograph pasted onto a wooden shipping crate, designed to catch a grocer's eye on a crowded shelf. Such labels were especially common in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when apples moved in large quantities by rail to cities across the country. Its place on a Thanksgiving board fits the season, since apples were a staple of autumn tables in pies, cider and side dishes.
