Most circus posters of this era were printed in English, but this one carries German-language text: "Die Barnum & Bailey Größte Schaustellung der Welt" and "Eine herrliche Menagerie." That detail points to the company's tours through German-speaking territory, where it advertised its trained animal acts to local crowds. The poster is a chromolithograph, a multicolor printing method that was popular for circus advertising around 1900. It was issued by the Strobridge Litho. Co., an American firm that produced many of the bright, large-format posters used to promote traveling shows.
