Rather than a painting or photograph, this 1936 silkscreen announces an exhibition of graphic arts and wood sculpture at the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Gallery in Springfield, Massachusetts. Its Federal Art Project sponsorship places it among the publicity posters the WPA produced to bring audiences to government-supported shows during the Depression. Silkscreen, a method the project's poster division relied on heavily, allowed artists to print bold, flat color in modest runs at low cost. The April 1937 date stamp on the back records the poster's later handling, months after the exhibition it advertised.
