This poster sets itself apart from most recruiting images of the war because it has no picture at all. Its appeal rests entirely on a quoted extract from a letter written from the trenches, presented under the call to "join an Irish regiment to-day." Printed in Dublin in 1915, it reflects an effort to recruit men in Ireland specifically, at a time when Irish units were being raised and when appeals often drew on soldiers' own words to persuade neighbors and friends. The letter form gave the message a sense of firsthand authority that a slogan alone could not provide.
