Joseph Devlin, a Nationalist member of Parliament, is the figure whose words anchor this lithograph, which quotes him wishing the Irish Brigade well and urges Irishmen to answer the call. Printed in Dublin by Hely's Limited in 1915, it belongs to the recruiting campaign that John Redmond's Irish Parliamentary Party backed, in the hope that Irish units would strengthen the case for Home Rule once the war ended. The poster carries no illustration, so its appeal rests on Devlin's name and the language of duty and a "righteous cause.
