Printed in Dublin by Hely's Limited, this recruiting poster asks whether men have any women-folk worth defending and urges them to remember the women of Belgium. The reference is to the German invasion of Belgium in 1914, when reports of harm done to civilians circulated widely in British and Irish newspapers and became a powerful rallying point for enlistment. Dated 1915, the chromolithograph belongs to the recruiting drive of that year, when the British Army depended heavily on volunteers, and it shows how appeals to protect home and family were used to draw men into the ranks.
