Its call to "avenge the Lusitania" ties this Irish recruiting poster to one of the most shocking events of the early war. On 7 May 1915, a German U-boat torpedoed the Cunard liner off the southern coast of Ireland near Kinsale, and roughly 1,200 people died, many of them civilians. Issued in Dublin later that year by the Central Council for the Organisation of Recruiting in Ireland, the poster channeled that anger into enlistment, and its subjects of drowning, lifeboats and submarine warfare show how the sinking was presented to the public at home. Dublin printers John Shuley & Co. produced the color lithograph.
