The view from Mount Holyoke, the wooded ridge rising above the Connecticut River valley in western Massachusetts, is the subject here, and this lithograph is plate 6 in *Scenery of Massachusetts*, a book of views drawn from the geological report of Professor Edward Hitchcock. Hitchcock served as the state geologist, and his survey work gave the illustrated volume its scientific framing. The print was made by Thayer's lithography firm in Boston in 1842 and published in Northampton by J. H. Butler. Its pairing of scenic views with geological study reflects the period's interest in the landscape as both a natural and a cultural subject.
