Salem, Massachusetts, is the setting here, a harbor town whose fortunes rose on the Atlantic trade in the late 1700s, when its merchant ships reached as far as Sumatra and China. The town is best known today for the 1692 witch trials, but its maritime wealth is what left behind the handsome wooden houses and busy waterfront that drew the city's early photographers. Views like this one capture a place that was, in the decades after the Civil War, shifting from sail to steam and from shipping to manufacturing.
