Few early views of Salem, Massachusetts, put the harbor front so squarely in the foreground, with wharves, rigging, and moored vessels crowding the water's edge. The captions appear in German, English, and French, suggesting the print was meant for European buyers curious about the American colonies. Engraved by Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt and dated to the 1770s, it captures the town during the Revolutionary era, when Salem's shipping was central to its economy. Salem's later notoriety from the 1692 witch trials is absent here. The scene shows a working port, and the hand coloring brings out the ships and the activity along the docks.
