A bird's-eye view of Salem, Massachusetts, shows the town from a high, imagined vantage point, with its streets, wharves and rooftops spread out below. Panoramic lithographs like this were a popular way to picture American towns in the nineteenth century, and they often doubled as civic boosterism. Salem's link to Halloween comes from the 1692 witch trials, a dark chapter the city has long remembered and that later drew large autumn crowds to its streets.
