Cresson sat high in the Allegheny Mountains of Cambria County, and this view presents it as a summer destination rather than a industrial town. The Pennsylvania Railroad promoted the area to city families seeking cool air and mineral springs. After the Civil War, rail travel from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh made the mountains a practical getaway, and resorts like Cresson grew up along the main line. The town lies a short distance from Johnstown, the valley city devastated by the flood of 1889, so the picture also shows the leisure economy that rail travel brought to the same hills.
