The title announces that the Hotel Vanderbilt in New York had installed a radiophone set and introduced its new operator, a woman, at a time when wireless telephony was still a novelty. In early 1922, radio was just moving from amateur and military use toward public broadcasting, and hotels were among the first businesses to offer guests radio reception. The picture comes from Underwood & Underwood, a New York news and portrait photography firm that supplied press images in the 1920s. It records both a new technology and the growing number of women taking technical jobs in urban workplaces.
