Few players of the 1880s drew as much public attention as King Kelly, the Chicago White Stockings outfielder shown here. Goodwin & Company included cards like this one in packs of its Old Judge cigarettes, and collectors now know the series as N172. Kelly's reputation for daring baserunning and his popularity with fans made him a natural subject, and the albumen print preserves the look of late nineteenth-century photographic portraits.
