Two of baseball's most powerful administrators appear together here: John Heydler, president of the National League, and Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the sport's commissioner since 1920, when he was hired after the Black Sox scandal. Raising a championship flag was a public ceremony that marked a title and put the game's leaders in front of the crowd. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives recorded daily life in the early twentieth century. Look for the streaks and spots on the plate, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
