A flagpole rising above the seats marks this view of Ebbets Park in Brooklyn, the ballpark later known as Ebbets Field, as workers haul the flag into place on April 14, 1914. The park had opened only the year before, in 1913, and raising the flag was a common ceremony at early twentieth-century ballgames. The photograph came from the Bain News Service, a press agency whose pictures of American news and daily life make up the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The image was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a visual history of the United States.
