The Capitol dominates the center of this aerial view, its white dome and long wings standing out against the grid of streets that fans out across the city below. Looking down on the building lets you see how it anchors the layout Pierre Charles L'Enfant laid out in 1791, with the National Mall stretching west toward the Washington Monument and the White House lying to the northwest. Aerial photographs like this one became common in the early twentieth century, and they give a rare sense of how the Capitol sits at the head of the city it was built to govern.
