This aerial view sets the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building in the foreground, with the Capitol rising across the open grounds of Capitol Hill. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897 as the nation's library moved out of the Capitol's crowded halls, and its ornate Beaux-Arts interior was meant to match the republic's ambitions. Looking down from above shows how the two buildings anchor the hill, with the Capitol's dome as the clear focal point. Aerial views like this one became more common in the early 20th century, offering a planner's view of the city's layout.
