This view shows the Carnarvon tower of the Britannia Bridge, the rail crossing that carried the Chester and Holyhead line over the Menai Strait in north Wales, as it stood in September 1848. Robert Stephenson designed the bridge around wrought-iron tubes, large hollow box girders that trains ran through, and the stone towers at each end were built to carry them. G. Hawkins drew the scene and Day & Son printed it as a tinted lithograph for Edwin Clark's account of the bridge, where it appears as plate IV. The print is a useful record of a major engineering project at the moment its masonry was nearing completion.
