Smith's patent truss bridge appears in this color lithograph printed by Strobridge & Co. of Cincinnati, a firm known for commercial and promotional prints of the period. The date of about 1868 rests on the patent record: Smith's first truss patent was granted on July 16, 1867, and the bridges pictured lack the lateral and portal bracing he added in a second patent of December 7, 1869. That absence makes the print a useful record of the design before that refinement.
