Few engineering views of the 1840s show a structure mid-construction as clearly as this one, which depicts the platform of tubes at the Britannia Bridge as it stood in September 1848. The bridge carried the railway across the Menai Strait to the Isle of Anglesey, and its large wrought-iron tubes, designed under Robert Stephenson, departed sharply from the arched and suspended spans common at the time. G. Hawkins drew the scene and Day & Son printed it. The plate appeared in Edwin Clark's 1850 account of the Britannia and Conway tubular bridges, so it served engineers as a record of the work as much as a view of it.
