The plate records the work of raising the second iron tube of the Conway bridge in north Wales, a moment when the structure was still being assembled. The tubes were box girders carrying the Chester and Holyhead Railway across the Conwy estuary, a design associated with Robert Stephenson, who also built the nearby Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait. George Hawkins drew and lithographed the plate, and John Weale published it in 1849 as an illustration for Edwin Clark's account of the two bridges, written for engineers and general readers alike.
