Rather than a view of the whole structure, this plate shows a single section of one of the wrought-iron tubes that carried trains across the Menai Strait at the Britannia Bridge in north Wales. The isometric projection draws the tube in three-dimensional geometry, so engineers could read its plates and rivets without the foreshortening of perspective. It appeared as plate 13 in Edwin Clark's 1850 account of the Britannia and Conway tubular bridges, written by an engineer who worked on the project. Drawings like this were the working language of Victorian railway engineering.
