Dated September 1906, this portrait of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen comes from a moment when his name was appearing in newspapers around the world. The Library's caption card ties the picture to Arctic exploration that year, when Amundsen's small sloop *Gjøa* completed a passage through the Northwest Passage, the sea route across the Canadian Arctic that had defeated many earlier expeditions. The photographer is credited as F.H. Nowell, but the record notes that its date and other details are unverified, so the exact circumstances of the sitting remain uncertain.
