The Show-man" is a hand-colored etching from 1798, engraved by Cruikshank after a design by Woodward. In the late 1790s, London print shops sold satirical sheets like this one in large numbers, and publishers often added color by hand to make them stand out in shop windows. Cruikshank was one of the busiest caricaturists of the decade, producing prints on current events and familiar social types, so the title suggests a performer whose showmanship is meant to be read with a mocking eye. The record's subject tags are unverified, so the exact target of the satire is best judged from the sheet itself.
