Turned to the left and shown from the waist up, this portrait presents Potter Palmer, the Chicago merchant whose name became tied to the city's hotels and retail trade. Palmer built his fortune in dry goods on State Street before moving into real estate and hospitality, and after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 he was among those who led the rebuilding of the downtown district, including the Palmer House hotel. The caption card records no date, so the sitting cannot be placed precisely, but the portrait belongs to the decades when he was one of the city's most prominent businessmen.
