Black Growler is a steam vent in the Norris Geyser Basin, named for the roaring, growling sound it makes as it vents. This 1902 stereograph card would have been viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional depth that flat photographs could not. Stereo views like this one were a popular way for Americans to see distant landmarks, and Yellowstone, set aside as the first national park in 1872, was among the most photographed. The card was published by Carleton H. Graves, who issued numerous western views in this format.
