Black Growler is one of the steaming, hissing thermal features of Yellowstone, a landscape that had drawn tourists since the park was set aside as the nation's first national park in 1872. This stereograph was published in Philadelphia by George W. Griffith around 1902, when stereo cards were a popular home entertainment. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave the rising steam and rough ground a sense of depth. The card is one of many such views that introduced armchair travelers to the park's wonders.
