Few photographs bring together two performers as different as these: escape artist Harry Houdini, his wife Beatrice, and the French actress Sarah Bernhardt, pictured together in Boston in 1917. Bernhardt, then in her early seventies, was still touring America long after she had become one of the most celebrated stage actresses in Europe. Houdini, the Budapest-born magician, was at the height of his fame for daring escapes, and Beatrice often worked alongside him on stage. The meeting of a magician and a tragedienne shows how theatrical celebrity moved between vaudeville, drama and popular spectacle in the early twentieth century.
