William E. Borah served as a United States senator from Idaho for decades, and this portrait lithograph presents him as the state's most prominent political figure of his era. Borah was known for his independent streak, championing progressive causes and resisting party orthodoxy, and he later became a leading voice in foreign policy debates in the 1920s and 1930s. Lithographic portraits like this one were widely reproduced in the early twentieth century, so the image reflects how a politician's public face was circulated through newspapers, pamphlets, and campaign material. Its value today lies as much in what it shows about political image-making as in the likeness itself.
