The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, shown in an older view of the building that has anchored the federal legislature since the late 1700s. The Capitol was designed by William Thornton and later reshaped by Benjamin Latrobe and Charles Bulfinch, and its dome and wings grew through the 19th century as Congress expanded. Its cast-iron dome, completed during the Civil War, is among the features most worth noticing in pictures like this one.
