This view shows the United States Capitol, the domed seat of Congress that rises at the east end of the National Mall in Washington, DC. George Washington laid the cornerstone in 1793, and the building was rebuilt after British troops set fire to it in 1814 during the War of 1812. Its cast-iron dome, completed in the 1860s and crowned by Thomas Crawford's Statue of Freedom, became the building's most recognizable feature. Photographs like this one record how the Capitol and its grounds looked during the decades when Washington was growing into a national capital.
