The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, shown in a vintage view that catches the building in its earlier era. The Capitol has housed Congress since 1800, when the government moved to the new capital from Philadelphia, and its dome and wings were expanded over the nineteenth century. Older photographs like this one record how the building looked before later additions and restorations, and they remain useful for tracing changes to its grounds and architecture.
