In 1912 Gulfport, Mississippi, was a young coastal city that had grown up in little more than a decade around its harbor and the railroad that served it. Its economy rested on the southern pine boom, as sawmills up the rail lines sent lumber through the port to buyers in the United States and abroad. Visitors arriving by train and steamer also made the Gulf shore a destination for winter stays, and hotels like the Great Southern were built to house them. The hotel stood as a sign of the town's ambitions, with the city still shaping its streets, wharves and civic institutions as it tried to be known as the Gulf Coast's leading port and resort.
