Little is recorded about the sitter of this portrait beyond the title, "Lucille," and a copyright deposit number, 2599-07, which places the print in the U.S. Copyright Office around 1907. Images registered in this way were submitted so the Library could keep a record of them and so the maker's rights were documented. Studio portraits of Native American women from these years were often sold as cabinet cards or postcards, and they show how photographers and the public of the era framed Indigenous people, frequently in posed settings. The picture is worth studying both for the individual it shows and for the commercial market that circulated it.
