Few posters of the period announce an exhibition as directly as this 1916 Berlin lithograph, whose title, *Die Kunst im Krieg*, translates as "Art in War." The record ties it to a wartime exhibition in Berlin, and its subject headings point to helmets, a familiar emblem of the German army that appeared often in wartime imagery. Color lithography was the main method for mass-producing posters in Germany at the time, allowing bold designs to be printed cheaply and pasted on city walls. Like many posters of the war years, it shows how German cultural institutions used graphic art to address the public about the conflict.
