Few home-front posters ask for something as ordinary as diapers, yet this 1917 color lithograph by Fr. Gerecke does exactly that. It appeals to the women of Braunschweig (Brunswick) during a diaper week from May 12 to 18. By 1917, Germany's war economy was short of cloth and other basic goods, and campaigns like this one tied everyday household work to the war effort and to the care of infants. The poster's direct address to women reflects how civic appeals of the period relied on them, since they ran most households while men were at the front.
