This glass negative is labeled "Elmer Dover" with a date of April 25, 1921, though the National Photo Company's own title and date are unverified, so the sitter and occasion remain open to research. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active from the 1910s into the 1930s, produced large numbers of news and portrait pictures on glass plates. This example came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which affects how much tonal detail can be read.
