Here we have a portrait of a man named Elmer Dover, captured on a glass negative dated September 6, 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that worked from the early 1900s into the 1930s, produced large numbers of images like this one, and its glass plates were later donated to the Library of Congress. Because the negative is made of glass, it preserves fine tonal detail, though the record notes streaks and blemishes caused by deterioration of the original coating. The identity of the sitter rests on information written on the negative sleeve, which the archive has not independently verified.
