A glass negative bearing the name Robt. H. Coker and the date September 8, 1923, it is one of the many plates the National Photo Company produced in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, when the firm recorded local people, events and street scenes. The name comes from information the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity deserves some caution. Streaks and blemishes visible on the plate result from natural deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition in glass negatives of this age. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
