This glass negative is a 1923 record of Martin B. Madden, a Republican who represented Illinois in the House of Representatives for nearly three decades. It is dated September 6, 1923, and belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington studio that photographed officials, diplomats, and other visitors to the capital in the 1910s and 1920s. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for streaks and small blemishes on the glass, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
