The negative is labeled "Maurice Ulser," and its date, September 7, 1923, is the only other specific fact the record offers, so the sitter and occasion remain unconfirmed. It comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that made a large body of portraits and news pictures in the early twentieth century, many on glass plates like this one. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for streaks and small blemishes across the surface, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coating rather than to anything in the scene itself.
