Washington's winter journey to the Ohio Country in late 1753 is one of the best-known episodes of his early career. The 21-year-old Virginia militia officer carried a demand from Governor Robert Dinwiddie that French forces leave land Virginia claimed. He traveled through snow and icy rivers to Fort Le Boeuf, where he received a polite refusal, and on the return trip he nearly lost his life on the frozen Allegheny. The caption card gives no date or artist, so this picture is best understood as a later depiction of that mission, one that helped set the stage for the French and Indian War.
