Washington is shown in a canoe with three companions in this woodcut, which depicts his journey down the Ohio River in late 1753 and early 1754. Virginia's lieutenant governor, Robert Dinwiddie, had sent the 21-year-old surveyor to deliver a warning to French officers building forts in the Ohio Country, and the trip through cold, ice-choked water was a hard one. The caption card records no date, so the print was likely made long after the event. Its place on a board of Revolutionary War battles reflects how later storytellers traced Washington's rise back to these early frontier missions.
