This engraving shows the 1753 meeting, which the record dates to 1754, between a young George Washington, traveling with the frontier guide Christopher Gist, and Aliquippa, a woman leader among the Native peoples of the upper Ohio country. Washington was carrying a message from Virginia's governor to the French forts in the Ohio Valley, and he stopped to meet her as he passed through her territory. The print dates from about 1856, when interest in Washington's early career was growing, and it reflects how 19th-century artists pictured his frontier years as the start of his public life.
