Here Washington stands among the officers who served under him, a group portrait built for the parlor wall rather than a record of any single battle. Alexander Hay Ritchie, a Scottish-born engraver who worked in New York, drew and engraved the plate, and Emil Seitz, a New York publisher, issued it around 1870. By then, the centennial of the Revolution was drawing renewed attention to Washington, and engravings like this one gave middle-class households a way to display the nation's founding leaders. Look at how Ritchie arranges the figures to suggest rank and loyalty around the central commander.
