Few sites in Fairfax County carry as much family history as the burial ground at Belvoir, where this view shows the grave of Lord Fairfax and his wife, Debora. Belvoir was the Fairfax family seat on the Potomac, a short distance from Mount Vernon, and its owners were close friends of George Washington during the colonial years. The National Photo Company made this glass negative sometime between 1909 and 1940, when historic homes and graves drew steady interest from visitors and publishers. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
