Franklin appears here at work among the hand presses of an early print shop, the trade that gave him his start. The picture reproduces a painting by Charles E. Mills, and the Detroit Publishing Co. issued it as a photographic print around 1914, when such reproductions were widely sold to schools and homes. In the 1720s, the period the scene evokes, Franklin was a young printer in Philadelphia who would later run the *Pennsylvania Gazette* and publish *Poor Richard's Almanack*, so the image captures the beginning of a career that carried him well beyond the print shop.
