Here Franklin is shown at a printing press, the trade that occupied him in Philadelphia during the 1720s. The picture reproduces a painting by Charles E. Mills and was issued around 1914 by the Detroit Publishing Co., a firm known for making widely sold copies of artwork and scenes. Franklin's work as a printer, including the *Pennsylvania Gazette* and *Poor Richard's Almanack*, gave him the platform for the writing that later made him famous, and the press itself is a useful detail for anyone interested in eighteenth-century printing.
