Young Benjamin Franklin is shown hawking printed ballads on a Boston street, a scene drawn from his own account of boyhood. In his *Autobiography*, Franklin recalls that his older brother James printed the ballads he wrote and that he sold them himself, an early taste of the printing trade that would shape his life. Charles E. Mills painted the scene in 1908, and this print from about 1914 reproduces that painting as issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its color photographic views of the period. The picture was a popular way to present Franklin as a self-made young man.
